Saving Money on Deodorant

When I was younger I would use deodorant once every few days.  I rarely ever had to wear it.  I didn’t smell or have perspiration.  Since perimenopause set in I sweat like crazy.  It is disgusting.  I forget to put some deodorant on and I stink!  I used to keep a stick in the master bathroom and the guest bathroom. I am out of the one in the guest bathroom and not exactly thrilled with the name brand deodorant in my master bath.

I read that coconut oil is a great antiperspirant.  So I tried it.  I used very little on my fingers and put it onto my underarms.  It stopped the wetness, but odor was still present. So I went searching online for some ideas of how to make my own deodorant.  I found that coconut oil, and almond oil are used lots.  Baking soda and cornstarch are used too.  I have my beeswax so I wanted to use it.  Initially I used about 1/2 an ounce of beeswax, 1/2 ounce of coconut oil, 1 tsp of baking soda, 1 tbsp cornstarch.  I melted the beeswax and coconut oil in a small flat jar placed in pan full of water on the stove on low. Once melted I stirred in the baking soda and cornstarch until well mixed. Then I added about 1 tsp of lavender oil and 1/4 tsp of tea tree oil.   Let it sit and it was as hard as a rock.  I added about two ounces of coconut oil more and melted everything again.  The consistency was perfect.

I used a small, tiny amount on my fingers and put on one underarm and repeated on the other.  It works great.  I really want to keep working on this and make it better.  So next time I will try it without the beeswax and see how it works.  Try it yourself and let me know what you do and how it works for you.

Here’s the thing, I want something that works, but uses safe, natural ingredients.  Other than the beeswax I have everything on hand.  It just took a small bit of time.

UPDATE:  Today I put this on (8/21/12 just before my daily walk.  I started my walk at 10:10.  I walked for 79 minutes.  Each circle was 1.5 miles and I completed 3 circles (4.5miles).  The temperature outside was over 90 degrees Fahrenheit and at least 50% humidity.  I sniffed my underarm at each half circle.  I did not smell any odor at all until the end of my walk and checked just before I got into my truck.  Luckily I walk where no one can see me smell myself.
